BMW creates subsidiary in Kaliningrad for potential production, talks on plant ongoing
MOSCOW. Jan 11

BMW's Russian division, BMW Rusland Trading LLC, registered the BMW Rusland Automotive LLC subsidiary in Kaliningrad on December 25, 2017, according to SPARK-Interfax.

The subsidiary's main type of activity will be "the lease and management or owned leased immovable property," but other listed forms of activity include the production of cars, motorcycles, car bodies, internal combustion engines, electrical and electronic equipment for automobiles, seats and other components and accessories for automobile and others.

"We can confirm that we registered the company BMW Rusland Automotive LLC in December 2017. This was a planned step as part of our work to develop production in Russia, as announced," Maximilian Kellner, head of BMW in Russia, told Interfax.

Kellner said the company was looking seriously at Kaliningrad as a suitable production site, "given BMW's long-term presence in this region, and its attractive investment climate and the plans of the Kaliningrad authorities to improve it further." "Over the last few months we have been in talks with the Kaliningrad government to assess existing opportunities and prospects and to determine the optimal configuration on a potential BMW plant in the region," he said, declining to make further comment.

BMW has been discussing building a production facility in Russia for several years. The plant was initially expected to be built in Kaliningrad Region, at the planned automotive cluster around the Avtotor plant. But Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov said in December that BMW was discussing the construction of a plant with Kaliningrad and the Moscow Region, and making used of the GM plant in St. Petersburg.
