Uruguay: Hotels maintain stance against credit card payments

There is still a stand off between hotels in Punta del Este and Piriapolis in Uruguay and credit card companies such as Visa, MasterCard, Diners, American Express and Oca because the former will not lift their ban on payments made via credit card. A meeting was set up on 6 November 2009 by local tourist authorities with the aim of calling a truce between both parties, yet the hotels maintained their stance. Credit card companies called for a closer relationship with hotels, to work jointly on out of season promotions using their customer databases, and for a truce on the ban until the summer season is over. However, the hotels have lodged a complaint with the competition authorities in Uruguay and expect a decision to be made on the issue on 11 November 2009 before they will hold further meetings with credit card companies.
