Taking a look at the work of electricity firm;
The region's electricity network is undergoing a major overhaul and the work is being carried out by a group of highly-skilled individuals. In the first of three case studies, we speak to project manager Carl Davies.

The refurbishment, stretching from the village of Indian Queens into Devon, is being carried out by the Electricity Alliance.

The alliance is a partnership between the National Grid and 15 construction companies and the National Grid is funding the refurbishment.

"In addition to new electricity generation, the Alliance carries out a considerable amount of work to enhance and replace current National Grid assets, such as sub-stations, overhead lines and underground cables," Mr Davies said.

Safety

"These works ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the high-voltage electricity network and as project manager it is my job to make sure these refurbishment works are completed successfully, safely and on time.

Throughout his 18 years in the industry, Carl has held a variety of roles that have prepared him for project management.

"I started out as an overhead linesman and then moved up into the role of site supervisor where I managed the day-to-day activities of the workmen on site. I have received formal training and achieved qualifications while gaining on the job experience."

"My advice to anyone who would like to become a project manager and work in the energy sector, is to get a firm background experience of the industry, right from construction level."
