SAFETY CAMPAIGN AIMS TO KEEP TRI-RAIL MOVING;
OFFICIALS URGE RIDERS TO REPORT ANY SUSPICIOUS OR CRIMINAL ACTIVITY
Alex Zequeira Staff Writer

Local, state and federal law enforcement officials are taking aim at potential terrorists with a new campaign to keep South Florida's Tri-Rail transit system safe.

Operation Transit Shield II will be in full force Wednesday, with authorities handing out fliers and brochures urging people to report suspicious or criminal activity that could disrupt rail service.

The program comes just a couple of months before South Florida is set to host the Orange Bowl, the Pro Bowl and the Super Bowl.

Its goal is to forge a partnership with passengers so they can help law enforcement crack down on criminals and potential terrorists.

"If you see something, say something," said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti.

"Don't think it's normal. . . . We don't know what normal is until we check it out. . . . Suspicious vehicles, suspicious packages. . . . People that look out of the ordinary doing something that is not normal."

This is the second time a campaign like this has been in force. The first was last November, and law enforcement officials are hoping things run just as smoothly this holiday season.
