Gymnasts second at conference meet

The Mukwonago/Kettle Moraine varsity girls gymnastics team ended up in second place at 140.55 points at the Classic 8 Conference meet Feb. 14.

Franklin won the meet at 147.825 points. Sam Balcerak of Franklin combined won the allaround at 36.600 points.

Taylor Weis finished in seventh place on the uneven bars at 9.0. Megan Kowalczyk was eighth at 8.85 points.

Brooke Kangas tied for seventh on the balance beam at 8.725. Amanda Ward finished in eighth place in the floor exercise at 9.125.

"The balance beam was our demise," coach Margie Canfield said. "Most of the girls had very nice routines going then on their last pass; it was like the beam moved. Of course it didn't, but it sure seemed like it did. We will have to be much more solid than that for sectionals."

Canfield said with fine tuning, Kowalczyk could place in the top five at sectional in vault, and Weis is looking to get back to Wisconsin Rapids with her routine on bars.

"We look forward to a strong and tough competition at the sectional meet next week and would love to come out of it in the number 1 or 2 spot and make it to team state," she added.

Hannah Ysseldyke was the all-around winner in the junior varsity meet, scoring 31.7. Kangas added a new bar routine and was rewarded with a nice score, Canfield said.
