| Community Roundup: Oroville gymnasts strong at Zone 1 championships |

Oroville Gymnastics hosted the Zone 1 Championships, the Level 6 and Level 4 teams took first place and 17 gymnasts qualified for the NorCal Championships.Rebecca Graham won the Level 6 all-around, placed first on floor and beam and second on bars. Lauren Maxwell placed second all-around, second on beam, and third on floor and bars. Olivia Reed took second on vault and third on floor. Selina Schillig was second on vault and Mikaela Seeger was third on beam. Joining those five in qualifying for NorCal was Caitlyn Krause. Precious Martinez took third in Level 5 all-around, third on beam and floor and qualified as well.Jaspreet Ghuman took second in Level 4 all-around, first on beam and second on floor. Hannah Archuleta took third all-around and tied for second on beam. Alyra Andes took second in all-around, first on beam, and third on vault, bars and floor. Arely Mazariego was first on vault and third on floor. Faith Espada was second on bars, Alyssa Lacey took second on beam and Emily Burgess took third on beam. Joining those seven in qualifying for NorCal were Amber Burgess, Taylor Lacey and Jessica Davis.Athletic Horizons gets third The Athletic Horizons compulsory team competed at the Zone 1 Championships in Oroville. In Level 6, Junior/Senior 12-plus division, Sydney Holderbein placed third on vault and first on bars, beam, floor and in the all-around. In Level 6, Child 7-11, Tori Fountain placed first on bars. The Level 6 team placed third. In Level 5, Junior/Senior 12-plus division, Haley Lee placed second on floor and third on vault. In Level 5, Child 7-8, Abby Schimmel placed third on vault and Veronica Back placed third on bars. The Level 5 team placed third. In Level 4, middle division, Maya Noble placed second on bars. In Level 4, younger division, Mikaela Carlson placed second on vault and bars.YOUTH FOOTBALLJaguars win playoffThe Chico Jaguars Pee Wees beat the Foothill Cougars from Palo Cedro 28-6 to move to the championship round of the NorCalFed tournament. The unbeaten Jags got two scoring passes from Aiden Hight, a 55-yarder to Cameron Alfaro and 18-yard score to Creed Smith. Alfaro also added two rushing TDs, a 44-yarder and a 3-yard run. Lucas Bolen made two extra-point kicks. Ryan Prott and Bolen each made interceptions.GIRLS BASKETBALLBidwell wins tourneyThe Bidwell eighth-grade team won the Sequoia tournament. Bidwell defeated Sequoia 33-26, as Natalie Makel scored 12 points. Bidwell defeated Paradise 36-35 with nine points from Haylee Walker. In the championship game, Bidwell defeated Marsh green 30-28, and Makel had 14 points. Bidwell also defeated Sequoia 26-18 in a single game. Makel had 14 points and Walker added 13 rebounds.Marsh places secondThe Marsh eighth-grade green team was defeated by Central 45-44. Kaylee Schukei scored 11 points and Izzy Bonacorsi had 10. Marsh took second place in the Sequoia tournament. They beat Vista 27-17. Lindsey Lundberg scored 11 points. They defeated Cottonwood 32-27. Lundberg scored 16 points. Marsh lost to Bidwell in the championship game 30-28. Schukei scored 10 points.Notre Dame splits pairThe Notre Dame eighth-grade team lost to Paradise 50-18. Remington Long had six points. The Huskies beat Chico Junior 41-28. Long had 15 points and Krissie Mensching added 14.Marsh drops threeThe Marsh eighth-grade white team lost to Yreka 30-10. Megan Coletti scored four points. Marsh lost to Orland 32-5. Neah Beshears had three points. Marsh lost to Chico Country Day 52-15. Coletti and Beshears each had five points.Bidwell wins titleThe Bidwell seventh-grade gold team took first place in the Sequoia tournament. They beat Grant 30-13. Dominique Jackson had nine points. They beat Paradise 27-5, and MyKisha Abrams had 10 points. They won the championship game against Mountain View 30-26. Jackson had 14 points.Notre Dame defeats ParadiseThe Notre Dame seventh-grade team beat Paradise 20-15. Caroline Habib had seven points.BOYS SOCCERFury tie ArsenalThe U14 Chico Cal Fury tied the Rancho Cordova Arsenal 1-1. Gerardo Villegas had the only goal. Nik Schaeffer had the assist.Blazers top WoodlandThe Butte United U11 Blazers beat the Woodland Soccer Club 6-2. Both Cole Fiori and Odie Ahiligwo scored two goals. Camilo Rodriguez and Ezequiel Polino scored one each. Logan Hall had three assists. Goallies were Polino and Ethan Duran for the Blazers (6-0-1).Coyotes earn tieThe Butte United U10 Coyotes traveled to Rancho Cordova and tied the St. John's Mountain Lions 1-1. Junior Montes scored on an assist by Kevin Kremer. Greg Neuman finished the game in the goal for the Coyotes (14-3-5, 5-1-2 league).GIRLS SOCCERRebels win shutoutThe U16 Chico Lil Rebels beat the Azzuri Impact 3-0. Marissa Marshall had a hat trick for the Rebels. Goalie Emily Nava shared duties with Sura Boutros and Alex Freed in the shutout.Bobcats win twiceThe Butte United U16 Bobcats traveled to Manteca and defeated the MFC Vipers 8-0. Julie Haselton scored three goals, Shaelyn Sick had two and Allison Romig, Crystal Torres and Cydney Cone added one goal each. Romig and Cierra Venegas had two assists apiece, and Haselton, Torres and Cone each had one. Keepers Cone and Haselton had the shutout. The Bobcats defeated the Tracy AFC Pumas in their doubleheader 3-1, with Haselton scoring two goals on assists from Shaelyn Sick and Torres. Torres scored a goal on an assist from Haselton.Strikers go 10-0The Chico Cal U14 Strikers ended their league play with a 10-0 record, winning the Rip Ash tournament in Red Bluff with a perfect score of 40. They played in the Butte YSL League.Barracudas tie PrestigeThe Butte United U13 Barracudas traveled to Sacramento and tied Placer United Prestige 2-2. Karina Torres and McKenna Taylor scored goals for the first-place Barracudas (6-0-2).Sol fall to LegacyThe Butte United U10 Sol lost 1-0 to the LP Legacy. Sharing time in goal were Lillian Irons and Jaiden Preston.SWIMMINGAquaJets do two meetsThe Chico AquaJets participated in two meets at Shasta College in Redding. In the Junior Meet, Stephen Batchelder won one event. Kathleen West had a second-place finish.Swimming in the Age Group Meet, Madison Hopkins won a high point trophy in her age group by winning seven events and taking second once. Liam Davis won high point with three firsts and five seconds. Connor Hughes won once, placed second three times and third twice. Jaelyn Cornwell won two events and added one second. Sydney Limberg had one first, three seconds and a third. Daine Treff won once, placed second once and third three times.
