BC, MT say no mines, oil or gas in the Flathead

GAO Says Border Communities Need Better Drinking Water

 WASHINGTON, Feb. 9 -- Communities near the United States-Mexico border are plagued with the lack of safe drinking water and sanitation systems, posing health risks like waterborne diseases, according to a Government Accountability Office report titled, "Improved Coordination and Funding Processes Could Enhance Federal Efforts to Meet Needs in the U.S.-Mexico Border Region." Many federal programs provide affected communities grants, loans and other assistance. The GAO determined the level of financial support given as well as effectiveness of efforts to serve the communities. Analyzing agency financial data, reviewed legislation, policies and procedures and interviewed federal, state and local officials were among its activities, the GAO said.

 Manuel Flores, a U.S. Border Patrol agent who retired from federal service in 2007, is running as a Republican for the office of Otero County sheriff. Flores said he decided to run four years ago, but he was not ready for the previous election as he was still working for the Border Patrol. He decided to wait until 2010 to run. Flores said he believes the sheriff's department can achieve much higher performance levels. If elected, he said he would provide better training for deputies and obtain more resources for the department by aggressively pursuing federal grants.
